Chelsea Co-Owner Behdad Eghbali Breaks Silence on Strategy Shift and Managerial Turmoil

LOS ANGELES – Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali has signaled a significant pivot in the club’s recruitment strategy, confirming that the Blues will now prioritize "ready-made" talent to complement their youthful core. Speaking at the CAA’s World Congress of Sports, the Clearlake Capital co-founder provided a transparent look into the turbulent 2025/26 season.

The Maresca Departure and Coaching Stability

One of the most striking revelations was Eghbali's admission regarding former head coach Enzo Maresca. Despite the mid-season coaching change, Eghbali clarified that moving on from Maresca on New Year’s Day was "not a change we wanted to make," citing the negative impact that shifting systems mid-stream has had on the squad's rhythm.

Currently sitting four points adrift of the Champions League spots, the pressure is mounting on current manager Liam Rosenior. However, Eghbali offered a firm vote of confidence: "We’ve worked with Liam for over 18 months through the multi-club network. We know his attributes and we are behind him for the long term, even if recent results have been tough."

Current State of Play:

  • League Form: Only 1 win in the last 7 Premier League matches.
  • European Race: 4 points behind 5th-placed Liverpool with 6 games to play.
  • Silverware Hope: Chelsea remains in the hunt for the FA Cup, with a semi-final on the horizon.

Commitment Amid Fan Unrest

Addressing the planned protests from both Chelsea and Strasbourg supporters regarding the BlueCo ownership model, Eghbali was empathetic but resolute. "For the fans, we care. We want the club to be successful," he stated. He acknowledged that while the plan is in its "40th or 50th minute," the ultimate goal remains winning trophies consistently.

As the Blues prepare to face Manchester United this Saturday, the message from the boardroom is clear: the youth-centric project is evolving. By adding experienced, "elite" players to the roster this summer, the ownership believes they can find the stability that has eluded them since the takeover.
